The temporary theatre houses two seasons of arts and culture

In the park beside the Tonhalle concert hall in St. Gallen, a temporary theatre for 500 spectators was created. A temporary stage was required due to the refurbishment of the outdated theatre. The stage will host the performances of the St. Gallen city theatre for two seasons. Blumer Lehmann realised the timber construction as full-service general contractor. Named ‘UM!BAU’, the temporary structure is 50 m long and 26 m wide. The spruce and fir elements were prefabricated at our plant. A total of 350 m3 of wood was used. The roof and facades are clad with section sheet.

The temporary theatre construction was ready for occupation by mid-September 2020, and includes a stage, orchestra pit, foyer, gallery, storage area and recreation room for artists. The timber construction work took a total of 14 weeks from mid-April until the end of July 2020. A timber substructure installed right on top of the roof of the existing underground car park serves as the foundations of the prefabricated timber structure, which was constructed on top of this. Wet rooms were installed in containers and the stands are also of a timber construction. The plan is not to dispose of the temporary structure once it is no longer in use but to reconstruct it elsewhere. We have plenty of ideas but have yet to find the right location.
