Temporary school space to bridge the renovation period

Three two-storey modular timber buildings are providing additional school space, while construction and renovation work is carried out on several schools in the city of Bern. As of summer 2020, the classrooms and additional learning spaces for 14 classes as well as offices, kitchen, toilets, utility spaces and a staff room have all found a temporary home in the Brünnen pavilions.

Six former single-storey pavilions dating back to the 1960s are replaced by these two-storey modular structures, built using the advanced modular-x system by Bauart Architects. A total of 128 room modules were prefabricated and preinstalled to high quality standards in our factory and create up to five classrooms and group rooms per floor. Central corridors with covered outdoor stairways provide access to the pavilions, which are clustered around a courtyard. Pre-greyed spruce and fir slats were laid vertically to form the facade. The temporary structures meet the Minergie Eco standard.

Other locations also benefit from the city of Bern’s decision to provide additional, high-quality school and childcare spaces using flexible modular timber pavilions. Should requirements change, the pavilions can be dismantled and recombined to create a new school building elsewhere.
